SEATTLE, WA -For the past four years Ric Kilmer has re-searched every possible source in the US and Norway about his Grandfather, Pete Sanstøl the famous Norwegian boxer of the 1930s.
Kilmer has set up The Official Pete Sanstøl Web Site, and written a book, The Pete Sanstøl Story. He also has in his possession Sanstøl’s autobiography Gjennom Ringen (Through the Boxing Ring).
Born to storekeeper Jonas Sanstøl and Elen Dortea Nilsdatter Sanstøl at Moi, Norway, Peter Olai Sanstøl moved to Stavanger with his parents as a child. During his youth he took up boxing and later trained in Germany where he befriended the noted heavy weight Max Schmeling.
Sanstol - who boxed in both the fly - and bantam weight class at around 113 pounds - won 96 out of his first 99 bouts. He made his American debut in 1927 and was declared the World Champion in Canada when he defeated Archie Bell in Montreal in 1931. His title was, however, disputed in the United States. His last bout came in 1935 when he defeated Panama Al Brown a former bantam weight world champion. He became an American citizen and served in the US Army during WWII (1942-45).
He held a variety of jobs after retirement from boxing and took an interest in youth work and frequently lectured on youth guidance. He married Bessie Phyllis Gorden of Alaska in 1956. They lived for a time in Norway then in Long Beach, CA and still later in San Pedro, CA, where he worked for Norwegian shipping concerns as a translator. Pete Sanstol died of a stroke in 1982.
An above average student, as reflected in his June 29, 1918 Storm Middelskole report card, Pete was small for his age and as the new kid on the block in Stavanger he was frequently bullied and beaten by his more powerful peers. This may have turned his interest to boxing and instilled in him a life-long concern for the weak and exploited. His gentle and courteous manner led to his nickname ‘The Gentleman Boxer. ' From a number of newspaper articles it is clear that his Canadian and Norwegian fans regarded him world champion but he apparently attracted little attention among his countrymen in the United States and save for Ric Kilmer, Sanstol is a man history overlooked.

He graduated from Grant High school and eventually worked as a loftsman in the new Kaiser shipyards at the time of their startup. Wooden sailboats were his first interest. As he was rejected by the Navy for flat feet, he was drafted into the US Army Infantry. After basic training he was stationed in England and was taught invasion tactics. He went in on the third wave at Omaha Beach, Normandy and survived (barely) to go on to be attached to Patton's Third Army in charge of tank parts replacement vans. He continued as a TSGT through the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns and met the Russians at the Czech border.
He returned to Portland, Oregon to become a master wooden boatbuilder, working for Sells Marine Service until his death.
He married Mary Ellen Binschus, 9 Sept 1950 and they had two daughters, Rhonda Sater and Theresa Sater. Harold and Mary Ellen divorced in 1963 after years of struggle with Harold's all consuming alcoholism . He never recovered from his WWII experiences. Harold C. Sater committed suicide on 16 Apr 1969 and is buried in the Willamette National Cemetery as is his brother Orval T. Sater and their cousin Paul L. Sliper.
