Martha Elizabeth Lizzie Waaga was the first Waaga child born after Ole and Anna went into Dakota territory. Born 12/9/1883 in Woonsocket, Dakota Terr., Lizzie went to work at an early age to help out her mother after they moved to Moore, Montana. She lived with a family while going to school. Her report card shows she was a good student at Lewistown Public school in 1902, she was on the roll of honor. A newspaper clipping from the Moore Inland Empire for 10/25/1906 shows; David-Waaga, Voyle David and Miss Lizzie Waaga were married Wednesday at the home of Dr. O. F. David, over the drug store, at high noon. The ceremony was was performed by Rev. A. Coslet. None but relatives of the family were present. Both the young people are well known and well liked by their many friends, and the Empire joins with a host of acquaintances in wishing them much joy. A peculiar coincidence was the fact that the above wedding was celebrated on the 23rd anniversary of Dr. and Mrs. David's marriage. Many handsome presents were given to the bride and groom. Miss Camilla Wood was bridesmaid and Wilbur Culbertson officiated as groomsman. The wedding breakfast was served at noon and was very elaborate. The Moore concert band serenaded the newly wedded pair and also presented them with a fine rocking chair. After the band had played several pieces Dr. and Mrs. David invited the boys upstairs and set before them a fine lunch. Voyle and Lizzie stayed in Moore a bit longer than the other Waagas, they left in the early 1930's.

Ole (Ericksen) WAAGA2 was born on 28 May 1845 in Vaaga or Vaga, farm, Avaldsnes Parish, Rogaland Co. Nor.3 He was christened on 29 June 1845 in Avaldsnes Parish, Rogaland Co., Norway.3 He died on 14 April 1894 at the age of 48 in Woonsocket, South Dakota.3 Infor. in file from records of Luella Thompson Feland. Other family records were compared. Also infor. from L. Jean Timmerman who wrote a history of the Waaga's in 1980. Ole Erickson was the son of Eric Erickson and Martha Olsdatter. He was born 5/28/1845 on Vaaga or Vaga farm, Avaldsnes Parish, Rogaland County, Norway. He moved to Adams Co. Iowa, circa 1880. He died 4/14/1894, probably at Woonsocket, S. D. Ole couldn't make up his mind what name he wanted to use. He used the name of Apeland, but later Vaaga or Waaga. He had used the name Erickson, also Vaga. He also was sometimes called Eric.
Ole settled in Lasalle Co. about 1866. He and his family are in the 1865 census for Norway, Illinois. He is listed as a sailor, rather than a farmer like the rest of the family. He was the 3rd of at least 8 children; Erik, John, Baar, Lilabet, Bertha, Lile, and Martha.
The patronymic system of naming, used in Norway until about 1875-78, when permanent surnames were established, allows a researcher to follow both male and female lines quite readily. In fact, Ole Eriksen Vaaga, usually called himself Ole E. Waaga in this country and had he not occasionally used his patronymic name of Ole Eriksen after entering the United States, as well as his farm name of Vaaga (americanized to Waaga), an impossible task would have resulted. Knowing both names allowed Jean Timmermeister to locate the precise farm. Of which we have maps in file. The actual emigration of Ole to the United States was not properly recorded in parish records. But it can be assumed that it was about 1866-67. In file we have a record of his diptheria vaccination, 10/1/1850.
After their marriage, Ole and Anna Waaga lived in 4 or 5 Norwegian communities, working as farmers. Their first child, Edward E., was born the 29th of January, 1869, and died a year and a half later on 13 July 1870. Emma E. Waaga was born 10 April 1871, in the same house in which her mother was born in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois. (this is questionable).
Like most immigrants of Scandinavian descent, Ole Waaga was quick to be americanized and, on the 25th of October in 1870, he filed declaration papers for citizenship in the county courthouse in Ottowa, LaSalle Co., under the name Oly Erickson. The final papers were recorded 4 Nov. 1872, in the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court in Ottowa under Oly Erickson, and then Oly Eriksen Waaga was an American. The fragile, yellowed documents telling the naturalization story were the clue that the man known as Ole Waaga to his descendants was Ole Eriksen from the Vaaga or Waaga farm of Norway.
The Waaga's farmed the Mission Township of LaSalle County and then moved on to Adams County where four of the Waaga yongsters were born. Many Norwegians followed the free land or cheap land offers around the nation. Ole and Anna Waaga probably went to Adams County, Iowa, because Anna's parents settled there. The Waaga family is recorded in the 1880 federal census records as living in Lincoln Township of Adams County. Anna was described as unemployed for two months with female complaint.
From Iowa, the Waaga's took their brood of 4 children, two having died as babies, to Woonsocket, Sanborn County, Dakota Territory. Four more babies were born to Anna while living in Dakota Territory, the last in 1893, just a year before Ole died. A copy of Oly's naturalization certificate is in file, it shows he was naturalized on 11/4/1872, at Ottawa, Lasalle Co., Illinois. Also an abstract of title to land in Sanborn County, recorded in Woonsocket Dakota. Records indicate the Waaga's farmed the southwest quarter of section 7 of township 105, range 62 of Sanborn County, 158 acres. Obtaining the land from the U. S. government for $198.00 on 2/11/1884. He proved up on 1/25/1886. That is filed. But final transfer was in 1885. The land in Dakota Territory was not exactly what Ole hoped it would be apparently, for he appears to have been searching for a better place for his family and to make his livelihood. In a fine Norwegian hand, Ole wrote to his family about life in the Pacific Northwest and sent home money for them. The letter is dated 1890. Ole returned to the Dakota's sometime after that. He subsequently died 4/14/1894, but no record of his death could be found. His translated letter is as follows;
Blakely 4 May 1890, Often in memory, Wife and children. Today I will take hold of my pen and write a few lines.First I can say I am fairly well in health. At present I have a little rheumatism, yes it isn't so little either at times- But I have worked every day and aching much at times. But it costs to lay idle here in the west, when we lay idle we lose 75 cts. and that is too much when man has to work and theres little hiring- I don't have any news and nothing else to tell. There is nothing to pass the time with on Sundays as there is no church or anything else. I live on an island across the sound from Seattle - Here are two mills Ellen Sagbrug and a couple of brick factories. It costs 50 cts. to Seattle, it's about 8 miles, we can go for 25 cts. with a sailboat. Well I must close for this time because my right arm is beginning to ache, so I cannot hold the pen. Best wishes to you all from me. Ole E. Waaga I sent you a money____ for ten dollars for which answer as soon as you get it. Goodbye I don't hear anything from the one who is Esthers acquaintance.
This letter sounds to me like he is enduring but in despair. Low wages, away from family, apparently to make a living, suffering from arthritis, and no recreation nearby. It sounds like he can't afford to go to Seattle, earning only 75 cts. a day. It would take a strong man to endure it for the sake of his family. He was dead just 4 yrs. later.
