He was confirmed on 25 September 1835 in Fister church. Gudmund died on 12 September 1917 at the age of 97 in Strand, Adams Co, IA. He was buried in Strand Cem., Adams Co., IA. Gudmund and Guro rented a house at Nessa-bakkane (farm on the hill) at the lower Nessa farm. So many days a year they worked to pay the rent, the rest of the time he made wooden shoes. The family carried the shoes to a store in Fister and traded them for groceries. On 29 Apr 1870 Gudmund, age 50, wife Gurie, 55, daughter Kristine, 22, son Halvor, 18, daughter Malene, 16, son Lars, 13 and son Ole, 11, traveled aboard the beautiful sailing ship "Protector" from Stavanger, Norway, arriving in Quebec on 20 Jun 1870. Their eldest son, Kleng, departed Stavanger on the bark Hebe on 17 May a870 arriving in Quebec on 30 Jun 1870. Kleng went to Forest City in Winnebago Co, IA, and on 12 Nov 1870, in Winnebago Co, married Elen Guria Thorsdatter of Vareberg. Guri would not go to America until Gudmund promised she could live near her sister Bertha (Mrs. John Hetland), who was residing near Strand in Adams Co., IA. Gudmund and family first lived at Danway, LaSalle Co., IL, near Gudmund's three brothers, Hendrick, Lars and Gunner. John Hetland arranged for them to buy a farm near Strand in Adams Co., IA. The land contract was dated 13 Oct 1874, 80 acres @ $10 per acre. Gudmund sent John the down-payment of $100 for the 80 acres of land. This farm was one mile north and one-half mile east of the Strand Church. In 1875, Gudmund and Guri and three of their sons, Henry, Lars and Ole moved to IA. Martha Malena had married John A. Johnson, (her Uncle Lars Hendrickson's step-son), and remained in IL, later moving to Strand, IA. Gunhild Christine had married Austin Anderson and remained in IL, later moving to Lamoni, IA. Gudmund paid for his farm in ten years, then mortgaged it to help his sons buy their farms. Henry bought a farm one-fourth mile east of the Strand Church, Ole bought one-half north of the church, but sold it in 1895 and moved to Story Co., IA. Lars bought a farm one mile east and one-half mile south of the church. Kleng, the eldest son, and his family had been living in Winnebago Co and came to Strand and bought a farm one mile south and one-half mile west of the church. Gudmund was listed as Goodman Hendrickson in the 1895 Census record, house 122, family 125 in Lincoln Twp., Adams Co., IA, as age 74, a widower, a retired farmer, a Lutheran, not naturalized, could not read or write. Lars enjoyed the trip, exploring every part of the ship where he was allowed and a few places he wasn't allowed, a typical 15 year old, while his younger brother Ole cried all the way. The family first settled in LaSalle Co., IL, coming to Strand, IA, in 1875. After untimely death of wife Mary Helga, his sister Martha (Hendrickson) Johnson and her daughter Julia spent some time in the home caring for the family. Gerhardt, age 7, remained with his father, Johnnie, age 5, stayed in the home of his Uncle Ole Hendrickson, and Hiram, age 3, stayed with his grandparents, Gudmund and Julia Hendrickson. Lars bought 80 acres from the C.B.& Q. Railroad, 28 Nov 1882, for $960, a mile east and 1/2 mile south of the Strand Church, buying 34 acres more for $340 in 1888. On 17 Feb 1902 he bought 160 acres from Harry Hendrickson, known as the Mahoney place, which he farmed until his death in 1918 from heart trouble. Lars had rented the farm to his son Gay, bought a home in Corning where he planned to move on the 1st of March, but he died in Jan. Annie and five children moved to the house in Corning and Gay and Huldie lived on the farm for a year when Annie and children moved back to the farm the next year. Hendrickson, son of John and Lena Thompson Hendrickson, was born October 3, 1909 in Adams County Iowa and passed away September 24, 1976 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, following a massive heart attack. He grew up on the family farm and attended rural school, graduating from the Grant High School with the class of 1927. He attended the American Business College in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was first employed at the Grant Savings Bank, Grant, Iowa, then transferred to a bank in Chicago, Illinois. He returned to Adams County and was employed in the A. A. A. (ASC) office in Corning for several years. He was united in marriage to Mary Ida Gillet of Corning January 5, 1944. They began housekeeping on the farm where they now reside. To this union three children were born, two daughters, Phyllis and Marilyn at home and one son, Dennis, a senior at Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa. Lester was interested in all kinds of sports, participating in many different ways. Since his sons musical career, he became very interested in music, and attended all the concerts in high school and at Simpson College, Indianola. Over the years he was an Adams County supervisor, Lincoln Township assessor, treasurer of the Grant Telephone Co., Adams County Weed Commissioner, a member of the Adams County Medical Board, vice president of Nodaway Valley Baseball team for 14 years and treasurer of the Strand Lutheran Church. Lester and his wife Mary were treasurers of the Carbon Bicentennial. They worked diligently with other committees to make it a success. He was a good neighbor, always ready and willing to help anyone in need. He was a confirmed member of the Strand Lutheran Church, taking an active part in any service to the church. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Howard. Survivors include his wife, Mary, and their three children; a sister, Mrs. Donald (Margret) Shafer and husband; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Gillet ; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ralph (Florence) Smith and husband; four nephews and their families and one niece and son. Funeral services were held at the Strand Lutheran Church September 27, at 2 pm, with Pastor Gudmund Peterson and Pastor Herbert Bjorkquist officiating. Interment was in the Strand cemetery.
