She had been warned to not put hot ashes on the back porch. One winter night, she set a pan of ashes on the porch and it started a fire. A neighbor to the east awoke and saw the fire. He went over and found Rusa standing in the yard in her night clothes and no shoes. Her feet were frozen and had frostbite on her hands. She then lived in the M. Stefonowicz shack until moving to Columbus.

Thomas A. Thompson Torbjørn Trondson AAREG^1,2 was born on 3 January 1812 in Aareg Farm, Skjold Parish, Norway. He was christened in February 1812 in Skjold Parish, Norway. He immigrated in 1837 to Norway, IL. Thomas died on 15 October 1870 at the age of 58 in Strand, Adams Co, IA. He was buried in Old Norwegian Cemetery, Strand Iowa. He was also known as Torbjorn Tronsen Areg. Thomas came from the Aareg Farm, Skjold Parish, Norway (northeast of Haugesund). Thomas was a farmer. He emigrated in the 1840's, possibly 1837, on the ship Enigheden to the Fox River area, in LaSalle Co., Illinois, where the Norwegian settlement was located. It includes a poem HERITAGE; "Look to the rock from which you are hewn."- Isaiah 51:1 ; The rock- yes., It is flesh, is blood and bone and marrow of bone. It is deeper than marrow of bone. The important one about Thomas is Norwegian Immigration, by Rasmus Anderson, 1896, the author was the son of an early Norwegian settler to the Fox River settlement of LaSalle Co., Illinois. The book is in reserve at Luther College library, Decorah, Iowa. There is a picture of Thomas and Kari and one of their sons. It says; "Among the emigrants of this year (1837) I find Thomas A. Thompson. He was born February 3, 1812, at Aareg, Skjold parish Norway, and died in Adams Co., Iowa, October 15, 1870. On April 1, 1848, he married Carrie J. Melland, from Etne, and she is still living at Strand, Adams Co., Iowa. Mr Thompson first settled at Norway, Illinois, where he bought a farm. In those early days the settlers broke up only small patches on their land and raised a little wheat and garden truck. When the time for marketing came, ten neighbors would sometimes club together, load one or two wagons, hitch two or three yoke of oxen to each wagon, and then start for Chicago to sell their produce and purchase as economically as possible the necessaries of life. On coming near Chicago they would sometimes have to hitch 5 or 6 yokes of oxen to a single wagon in order to pull it thru the mud, for which Chicago was noted. In the Fox River settlement that city was then known as " The Chicago mire." In course of time home markets were established and the overland trips to Chicago were abandoned. In 1877, Thomas A. Thompson moved to Adams Co., Iowa, where he died as stated above. He was a Lutheran when he emigrated, but joined the Methodist church in this country. Mrs. Malinda Nelson, (wife of Peter Nelson Ovrebo) now living in Strand, Adams County, Iowa came in the same ship, Enigheden (the 4th shipload of Norwegians to follow the "Sloopers" to the USA), with Thomas A. Thompson. (Since they came on the same ship, this is also how Thomas came) The Enigheden was 11 weeks and three days on the way from Stavanger to New York. They made their way up the Hudson River to Albany, thence by canal to Rochester, New York, where they stopped several days, thence to Buffalo, and then on by the lakes to Chicago. As soon as they arrived in Chicago, Malinda Nelson says they sent one man to the Fox River Settlement to engage some people to take the immigrants to Norway, Illinois. Two men engaged for that purpose were Helge Vatname and Samuel Peerson, who yoked their oxen to their "Hoosier wagon" and started for Chicago, and in about 10 days time these newcomers were thus brought to their destination, Norway, Illinois.
Genealogy Gleanings; In 1825- 150 years ago- the first organized group of Norwegians arrived in the United States. From their first settlements in the Fox River Valley, of Illinois they moved on to help develop our nation. To help commemorate this event an exhibition of photographs is being assembled which will be opened by Norwegian King Olav V on Oct. 16 this year. The exhibit will tour the U. S. and Norway. Readers are asked to please look in photo albums and old family trunks for historical photographs depicting early Norwegian activities in the new land; the photographs sought cover the periods of 1825 on. The pictures will be carefully handled and returned to you.
The book Norwegian Emigration 1821-1840, by Anderson above disagrees with family records as follows; All family records give the DOB of Thomas as 1/3/1812, not 2/3/1812. He died in 1890 not 1870 as Anderson says. After arriving in Norway he bought a few acres for $1.25 an acre. Note Anderson says he married Carrie J. Melland. The family records do not record Melland. They say Johnson, Johnsdaughter, or Johnsdatter.
