From what Einar told us I thought it would have been on the paternal side that our grandfathers were brothers. The farmstead contained four separate homes at the base of a mountain. In 1987 (& 1996); Delano, Maxine, Lester Cleven and wife Helen visited Moi and the original farmstead. There were no original buildings left that were there when Tonnes lived there. Sofia Moi, cousin to Delano, stated that the only building from that time period was the small playhouse sized building in their front yard that had been moved there from the farm. He was baptized on 20 May 1888 in Moi, Norway. He emigrated on 23 March 1906 from Stavanger (Sokndal), Norway. During World War II, he sent various care packages to Norway to help them in their struggle with the Nazi occupation. His only hobbies were fishing and a limited amount of woodworking. Apparently during the immigration process at Ellis Island and since he could not speak or write English at that time, they misspelled the Norwegian name Surdal (name of the family farm) as Surdahl. They lived in their own home at 607 East Street in Bottineau until about one year before their deaths. At that time, they could not properly take care of themselves any longer and Robert convinced them to move to the Old Folks home in Bottineau.
