Lars Knutson BRÆKKE was born on 6 October 1830 in Gulffjerdingen, Norway (west of Voss). Born in the area called Guldfjerdingen, west of Voss on the north side of Vossevatne (a large lake). Lars K. was a very successful teacher at the Seim school and also a kirkesanger and a great singer. He decided to go to America, so he left in spring 1857. He fell in love with a beautiful tall Norsk lady names Kristi Nedkvitne. After they got to Chicago and found Jorund, they were married. William was born there too. Lars left Chicago and went to Koshkonong, Wis. where Julia, Knute and Enger were born. The year of birth came from the census record of 1880, so there could be errors. In 1866, Lars brought his family to Blue Earth County, Minn. Lars had been very active in the church. He was klokker at Koshkonong and also at East St. Olaf. A very interesting church meeting was held after church May 29, 1877. Conducted be Rev. J.A. Thorson and Mr Lars Brakke called by the congregation to be "klokker" starting now. The title Hr. means an educated person - professor or teacher in this case. The Kokker is one who leads the hymn singing. He even had a pitch pipe. After church pastor gave him the numbers for next Sunday and he practiced and knew them. This was done before the days of church organs. Lars also served the church as sec. for many years. These were interesting to read.

After Kristi died Lars went back to Norway to visit. Upon his return he spent the winter months at David's home and summer out in Dakota. He was a loving grandparent and always remained the teacher.
