During the last year of JD's teaching career at Augustana College, there was a window of opportunity for getting her wish. Her friends, Alycia and Mandel Johnson, of Wisconsin, were unable to birth a child and Mary Ann offered to be a surrogate mother for them. The four of us, Mandel, Alycia, Mary Ann and JD then impregnated Mary Ann with Mandel's sperm and she immediately became pregnant. (JD knew about artificial insemmination, being a farm boy.) The physical pregnancy went well, even as JD had brachtherapy (radioactive seeds implanted) for his prostate cancer. In an event that was followed by many in Sioux Falls (Argus Leader, KELO stories), Mary Ann gave birth to Mylah early in the morning and later in the day, celebrated Mylah's birthday with a party at her and JD's home with numerous friends present to enjoy Mylah, ice cream and birthday cake. The next day, Mylah left with Alycia and Mandel for their home in Wisconsin.
