A statement on a fish he caught. Department of Fish and Game, State of Idaho, Boise, Idaho, 8/8/1951, Mr. Warren Roe, 419 S. 2nd St., Boise, Idaho,
Dear Mr. Roe:
Regarding the age of your 16 lb. 5 oz. rainbow caught June 23, in Warm Lake.
From scale readings, the following information has been determined:
1. The fish was in its eighth year.
2. Readings indicate five years of growth normal, the sixth and seventh year's growth was extremely rapid.
From this information, the following explanations can be drawn:
The fish in question could have been either a true rainbow or possibly a steelhead. The fact that the scale readings show normal growth the first five years, then a rapid increase in growth during the sixth and seventh years indicates one of two possibilities;
1. The fish was a non-migratory rainbow which altered its feeding habits at the end of its fifth year and began feeding heavily upon small fishes, explaining its rapid growth during its sixth and seventh years.
2. The fish conceivably could have been a steelhead delayed in its migration to the sea until its fifth year. Its rapid growth during the sixth and seventh years in this case can be explained by its stay in the ocean two years, returning to spawn in its eighth year.
I personally, am inclined to accept the first explanation.
Sincerely,
Leon W. Murphy

star also, we saw action off the Philippines), And the occupation medal should be shown, we were at Jensin Korea, in the occupation for two months, from 9/7/1945 to 11/12/1945. The ships history shows this.
A newspaper article from 1945; Navy Reveals Ships Lost in Typhoon, Washington (up), Three small ships were sunk, 30 others were run aground, and three more were damaged in the typhoon which swept Okinaw a Oct. 8 and 9, the Navy announced Sunday night.
The ships which ran aground were: The minesweepers Dorsey and Southard both former Destroyers, the minelayer Weehawken, the coastal mine sweeper Industry, the net layers Snowbell and Mahogany, the tanker Sananeaga, repair ships Nestor and Mona Island, motor gunboats PGM- 5 and PGM-7, Subchasers PC-1238, PC- 1239, and PC-590, the motor mine sweepers YMS-90, YMS-151,YMS-176, YMS-193, YMS-275, YMS-296, YMS-38 4, YMS-424,YMS-454, Landing ships LST-568 and LSM-361, the patrol ship YPE-289, the transports APC-103 and APL-14, and the Ocelot IX-110.
Damaged were the landing ship dock Tortuga and the ocean tugs Atr -58 and ATR-75.
The Navy said the Snowbell, Nestor and the PAC-103, LSM-361, PC-1 239, APL-14 andPC-590 all reported that they had suffered no casualties. No reports have been received from the other vessels.
The Navy had no figures on total casualties, but said the next of kin of dead and missing personnel were being notified by telegram.
Word received from Adm. Chester W. Nimitz headquarters at Guam, the navy said listed the following vessels as sunk; The yacht Southern Seas, the landing craft LSM-15, and the motor mine sweeper YMS-383.
This is the second typhoon to hit while we were in the area. The first was while the war was on, we ran out to sea to ride it out, as most ships did. It had winds of 150 miles an hour. I am aware we were told afterward two brand new Flush Deck Fletcher Destroyers broke in two and sank with all hands. They were welded. It took the bow out of a cruiser. There were ships up to 1/2 mile inland after the typhoon. We lost our steering and had to steer by hand thru the typhoon. We rolled over so far we almost took water down our stacks. Another APD, in the same storm, did take water down the stacks. That is about a 90o roll. You are supposed to capsize at a 45o roll. The waves were so high, at times the only sky we could see was directly overhead. The waves were about 100 feet high, we were told. It was quite a slow climb to the top, and when we got there waves were so sharp, we stuck out both ways, front and back, before we slid over and down. The screw made a lot of noise sticking out in the air. This was the worst Typhoon for us, and I think we took more losses in it. Of course the Navy didn't release any list then. You could see plates on the sides move during the storm, in fact we did pop some rivets. Our ship was a WWI converted 4 stacker, and a riveted ship. Going into it we had strung lines on deck, for safety. I was walking down the deck, when the ship heeled over, catching me by surprise. I lost my footing, and slipped out to hang over the ocean, holding on to a line with my hands, at full length. My buddy quickly locked his hands around my chest, and the line . Holding me there. When the ship righted itself, I got to my feet with his help. He saved my life, but I am ashamed to say I don't remember his name.
A 1952 newspaper article in file shows; Boisean Lands Big One, This is the fish that didn't get away. Its a Rainbow Trout weighing 17 lbs. and is 34 inches in length (error 36). It was caught over the weekend in Warm Lake by Warren Roe Jr. and Frank L. Bryson, both of Boise. Roe said the fish was caught while drift trolling. They used a jack-a-loyd. He added what went on the jackaloyd is our secret. Officials at Wilkies North Shore Lodge said it was the largest fish ever caught in Warm Lake . A 14 pounder was caught there 10 years ago. There was some speculation in Boise that the fish might be the legendary, "Old Ironsides" of Warm Lake that has fought off the hooks of fisherman for many years.

Died in the old folks home in Bryne. Brian and Kerri were not able to attend the funeral. Riktor was buried on 5 September 1997. He lived Jæren and finally at Bryne, Norway. Met uncle Riktor in Brynne, Norway in 1987. He was a perfect picture of my father but was only about 5'-6" tall while may dad was 6'-0". He could not talk English. He still lived in his own home (small but very nice) by himself, had a house maid, and did his own gardening. He had a habit of sitting in his chair and rubbing his thumbs against the arm of the chair which was also a habit of my dad.
Rolf told us about the Rolfsen (is it Rolfson) name when we were there. The story as I remember is that when uncle Riktor left the Surdal farm, he went to Stavanger and to allow him to get work as a fish monger, he had to have a name that was more acceptable to the local merchants. The Surdal name would indicate that he was from a different region in Norway (an outsider) and they would not like to deal with him. Therefore, he took the name Rolfsen (son of Rolf) which then made him appear to be a local youth and acceptable for dealing with the merchants.
He spent much time during working years on building the road from Moi towards Oslo. Met uncle Riktor in Brynne, Norway in 1987 and again in 1996 (when he was 99 years of age). He was a perfect picture of my father but was only about 5'-6" tall while may dad was 6'-0". He could not talk English. He still lived in his own home (small but very nice) by himself in 1987 and with Rolf in 1996, He had a house maid, and did his own gardening in 1987. He had a habit of sitting in his chair and rubbing his thumbs against the arm of the chair which was also a habit of my dad.
Rolf told us about the Rolfsen name when we were there. The story as I remember is that when uncle Riktor left the Surdal farm, he went to Stavanger to work with his brother Omund on the highways, he had to use the name Rolfsen as his brother Omund used that name and to be brothers, he changed to Rolfsen.
He spent about ten years after World War II building the road from Highway 44 between Oslo and Moi. He watched over prisoners as they built the road using hand tools (no heavy machinery). The road is built mostly in solid rock - very impressive.
Riktor indicated in 1996 that Tonnes went to the USA when Riktor was 8 years old.
